Capitals auctioning off Ovechkin’s Russian skates for charity

During the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets pregame, Caps leader Alex Ovechkin was wearing some colourful skates that will be auctioned off for charity at a later date.

All eyes will be on Alex Ovechkin’s feet during the warmups ahead of Thursday night’s game between the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets.

That’s because the Russian superstar will be sporting some pretty cool skates as the club celebrates Russian Heritage Night at Verizon Center.

The specially-designed Bauer Vapor 1X boots were designed by shoe artists Nick Avery and Polo Kerber and depict both the American and Russian flags as well as Washington’s Capitol Building and St. Basil’s Cathedral from Moscow.

The skates will be signed by Ovechkin and auctioned off, with all proceeds going directly to the American Special Hockey Association, for which Ovechkin has been an ambassador for the past three seasons.

ASHA helps give kids with physical and developmental disabilities the chance to play hockey. Ovechkin has also held special skating sessions for ASHA-affiliated kids and adults, even donating the car he received during 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend to the program.
