The Washington Capitals will turn to Braden Holtby for Game 3 of their first-round playoff series against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Capitals went with Philipp Grubauer for Games 1 and 2, dropping a pair of overtime contests at home to fall into an 0-2 hole.
Holtby has struggled in 2017-18, posting a 2.99 goals-against average and .907 save percentage in 54 regular-season games to lose the Capitals crease to Grubauer, whose play won over the confidence of head coach Barry Trotz.
Grubauer gave up four goals in Game 1, and then another four in Game 2 before being pulled for Holtby, who wound up taking the loss after getting beat in overtime on his eighth shot of the game.
The older Holtby (28 years old, compared to 26 for Grubauer), does have significantly more playoff experience, and his career numbers in the post-season compare well against his contemporaries.
The 2016 Vezina Trophy winner has a .932 save percentage in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for his career, though he has yet to make it out of the second round.
Game 3 will be played Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.
