The Washington Capitals will try to defend their Stanley Cup title without one of their key defencemen.

Michal Kempny underwent successful surgery on his left hamstring and will miss the next four to six months, the team announced Tuesday.

Kempny suffered the injury on March 20 in a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. While in a scrum with the Lightning’s Cedric Paquette, Kempny’s leg twisted awkwardly and he needed to be helped off the ice.

The Capitals acquired Kempny ahead of the 2018 trade deadline from the Chicago Blackhawks and helped solidify their defence on rout to the team’s first Cup championship.

In 71 games this season, Kempny has six goals, 25 points and a plus-24 rating.
