Jackets’ Carter placed on IR with fractured foot

The Columbus Blue Jackets’ dismal start to the season took a turn for the worse on Tuesday, as the club announced newly-acquired centre Jeff Carter has been put on the injured reserve list and will be out at least a week with a hairline crack on his right foot.

Carter, who has three assists in five games this season, missed some time in training camp after bruising the same foot, although GM Scott Howson told espn.com that it’s unrelated to his current injury.

The London, Ont., native suffered a similar injury in 2010 as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers and had to undergo surgery, causing him to miss seven weeks.

Columbus acquired Carter from the Flyers in June for winger Jakub Voracek and a first- and third-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

The Blue Jackets are currently in last place in the NHL after starting the season 0-4-1.
