Cup winner Shaw auctions off stitches from face

One hundred per cent of the money earned from Andrew Shaw's stitches auction will benefit cancer research.

When you get hit in the face with a hockey puck, your first instinct might be payback. Andrew Shaw’s response is to pay it forward.

Viewers of the Stanley Cup final no doubt recall the Chicago Blackhawks centreman taking a close-range shot to the cheek in Game 6, opening up a bloody gash on his face.

Now Shaw is auctioning off the stitches used to close the wound, as per his Facebook event page.

One hundred per cent of the money earned from the sale of Shaw’s stitches will benefit The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Bidding on the dozen or so face sutures — sold as a single lot — begins Aug. 15. The lucky winner will received a framed photo of the bloodied player hoisting the Cup and a letter from Shaw authenticating that these are actually the stitches that were in his face.
