Coach’s Corner: Crosby, stars shouldn’t fight

Don Cherry urges fans to stick with the Maple Leafs, predicting that in three years the strong front office will have things set right in Toronto.

When Sidney Crosby dropped the gloves with Brandon Dubinsky Thursday night it had the hockey world buzzing, but Don Cherry, a long-time proponent of the rough stuff, doesn’t want to see the NHL’s superstars fighting anymore.

“Crosby should never have to put up with stuff like this,” Cherry said on Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada Saturday. “He’s had concussions, he shouldn’t fight.”

Cherry said that Crosby has to put up with certain things that Wayne Gretzky never had to during his playing days.

“Think about Gretzky, think about Lafleur, Bossy. Did they ever fight? No,” Cherry said. “They had protection before. They don’t have protection now. Now you have the superstars fighting…They should never ever be fighting. They should be protected.”
