Coach’s Corner: Hammond ‘the talk of hockey’

Ron Maclean and Don Cherry talk about Andrew Hammond being the talk of the hockey world, sticking up for your star players and Connor McDavid.

If you hadn’t heard, Ottawa Senators goalie Andrew Hammond is playing quite well.

Heading into Saturday’s action, he was 12-0-1 with a .950 save percentage, 1.55 goals-against average and two shutouts and tied an NHL record set in 1938 by allowing two goals or fewer in each of his first 12 NHL starts.

“He’s absolutely sensational,” Don Cherry said on Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada Saturday. “He’s the talk of hockey right now.”

“The Hamburglar” has even earned free MacDonald’s for life, but more importantly the undrafted netminder has helped get his team right back into the thick of the Eastern Conference wild card race.

Cherry praised the 27-year-old’s numbers, nickname and on-ice awareness, while also wanting to point out the Hamburglar graphic on his helmet is an homage to Mad Magazine’s mascot Alfred E. Neuman rather than the actual MacDonald’s Hamburglar.
