Coach’s Corner: Robby Fabbri makes immediate impact with Red Wings

Robby Fabbri needed to hit the restart button. The Detroit Red Wings defenceman had underwhelmed through three-plus seasons with the St. Louis Blues, including just one point in nine games this year.

Sometimes, all it takes is a change of scenery. That has paid immediate dividends for Fabbri, at least.

In his first game after being dealt to the Red Wings for forward Jacob de la Rose, Fabbri scored a pair of power-play goals, including the game winner. He has a top six spot on a rebuilding Detroit team and skates on their top power-play unit.

“(Blues GM) Doug Armstrong was great letting him go there,” Don Cherry said Saturday during Hockey Night in Canada’s Coach’s Corner segment. “You know (Red Wings coach) Jeff Blashill will put him on the power play.”

As a pending restricted free agent, Fabbri may not factor into Detroit’s long term plans. But at least for now, he’s making the most of an increased role on a new team.

“Two goals in his first game,” Cherry said. “Terrific. Keep it up.”
