Cody Eakin suspended four games for charging Henrik Lundqvist

Watch as Cody Eakin takes out Henrik Lundqvist with a massive hit behind the net sparking the Ultimate Warrior’s theme music.

The NHL’s department of player safety delivered a swift ruling Friday afternoon, suspending Dallas Stars forward Cody Eakin four games for charging Henrik Lundqvist.

Eakin forfeits $85,555.56 in salary, which will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred midway through the first period of Thursday’s game, when Eakin bowled over the Rangers netminder while Lundqvist was playing the puck behind his net.

Eakin was issued a five-minute major penalty for charging and was ejected from the game.

Lundqvist was visibly shaken after the hit that sent his helmet flying, and left the game temporarily to undergo concussion protocol. He returned shortly after to help his club to a 2-0 victory.

After the game, Vigneault was adamant that the league take action.

“The league better do something about that hit,” Vigneault told reporters. “It’s everything that you want to take away from the game — hit to the head, forward motion, and it’s a goaltender.”
