Comparing Brian Elliott’s and Mike Vernon’s 11-game win streaks

Devan Dubnyk took it back to the road, Corey Crawford used his stick and Mike Condon stood on his head.

Brian Elliott has shaken off a terrible start with the Calgary Flames is now on the verge of setting a franchise record.

Elliott has won 11 straight games, tying a mark set by Mike Vernon in the 1988-89 season.

The game has changed quite a bit since then, as evidenced by the numbers put up by each netminder during their prolific runs.

For reference, here’s a look at the opponents and scores during Vernon’s streak. [sidebar]

Vernon gave up three or more goals in more than half of the games he played during his streak compared to just twice for Elliott.

If Elliott is going to set the franchise record with a 12th win, he’ll have his work cut out for him on Tuesday. The Flames are visiting the Washington Capitals, owners of the NHL’s best record.

The good news for Flames fans amidst Elliott’s run? The season Vernon had his 11-game streak was the same one that finished with Calgary’s only Stanley Cup win.

We’ll see if Elliott can bring the Flames to those same heights this spring.
