CWHL, NWHL to face off outdoors at Winter Classic

Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman take a look at all the top news from another busy Saturday in the NHL.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the CWHL and NWHL — the two women’s professional hockey leagues in North America — will face off for the first time…outdoors.

Ahead of the 2016 Winter Classic in Boston, the Montreal Canadiennes of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and the Boston Pride of the National Women’s Hockey League will play an outdoor game the day before the Bruins and Canadiens renew their storied rivalry at Gillette Stadium.

The CWHL is in its ninth year of operations while the NWHL is in its first. The two leagues are somewhat at odds with each other since the NWHL proposed to pay its players upon its inception. The CWHL, while it accommodates its players with travel and equipment and other perks, does not pay its players a yearly salary.
