Dan Girardi won’t be going anywhere before the NHL’s March 5 trade deadline.
The New York Rangers’ top-pair defenceman re-signed with the club Friday for six more seasons at an annual average salary of $5.5 million. Girardi’s $33 million deal carries a full no-movement clause through the first three years and a modified no-trade clause in the final three years, according to ESPN’s Katie Strang.

Had he not re-signed before July 1, the 29-year-old Girardi would have been one of the most attractive unrestricted free agents on the summer market.
The Welland, Ont., native has four goals and 13 assists this season, his eighth with the Blueshirts. His previous deal carried a salary cap hit of $3.325 million.
“Dan has been a Ranger for his entire career, signing with us as an undrafted free agent and working his way to become a top defenseman in the NHL,” GM Glen Sather said via press release. “His dedication to this club, as a leader both on the ice and in the locker room, is invaluable to this team. We are happy to have been able to ensure that he will continue to wear the Blueshirt.”
Girardi has ranked in the top six in the NHL in blocked shots in each of the last four seasons, and in the top 15 in average ice time in each of the last three entering this season. In 548 career games, Girardi has registered 35 goals and 136 assists for 171 points, along with 215 penalty minutes.
With Girardi signed, the Rangers’ main concern is now either re-signing or trading captain Ryan Callahan, a pending UFA whose contract negotiations have stalled with the team.
