Devils’ Cory Schneider avoids serious injury after leaving game vs. Jets

Cory Schneider had to exit the Devils' season opener against the Jets due to injury.

New Jersey Devils goalie Cory Schneider is available to play Saturday after leaving Friday’s game with “lower body cramping.”

According to the team, “the athletic training staff was able to effectively manage (the cramping) and it should not be an issue going forward.”

Schneider left Friday’s game early in the third period immediately after Jack Roslovic scored a goal against him. On that play, Schneider stretched out into the splits to try and make a save, and it appeared the injury was related to that.

Luckily for Schneider, and the Devils, the injury was not more serious. The 33-year-old has had trouble staying healthy in recent years. In 2018, he missed six weeks from January to March with a groin injury, then had off-season hip surgery that caused him to miss the start of the 2018-19 season. He then missed two months from December of 2018 to February of 2019 with an abdominal strain.

Schneider allowed two goals on 21 shots before leaving Friday’s game. MacKenzie Blackwood took over and allowed two goals on nine shots and then two more in the shootout to take the loss.

The Devils visit the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. It’s not known yet whether Schneider or Blackwood will start that game.
