New Jersey Devils forward John Hayden has been fined $2,016.13, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for cross-checking Detroit Red Wings forward Tyler Bertuzzi during the team’s 4-1 win on Tuesday, the NHL’s department of player safety announced.

The incident occurred at 19:14 of the third period after Bertuzzi threw a hit on the Devils’ No. 1 pick, Jack Hughes. Hayden responded with a high cross-check on the Red Wings winger.

Hayden was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct on the play.
