Devils’ Tootoo ejected for dangerous cross check on Boychuck

Jordin Tootoo got five minutes and a game misconduct for this hit on Johnny Boychuk, who was furious after the player.

New Jersey Devils forward Jordin Tootoo has a history of receiving supplemental discipline and could find himself in trouble with the NHL once again after he was kicked out of Friday’s game against the New York Islanders.

Tootoo was assessed five minutes and a game misconduct for dangerously cross-checking Johnny Boychuk into the boards behind the Islanders net in the second period. The cross check itself wasn’t too vicious but when you consider where and when it took place, Boychuck was lucky to avoid serious injury.

Boychuck skated off the ice on his own and appeared to be favouring his upper body. He angrily slammed his stick on the boards prior to heading to the locker room. He returned to the game at the start of the third period.

The Islanders only mustered one shot on goal during the five-minute power play.

Through 56 games with the Devils this season, the 33-year-old had four goals, five assists, a minus-21 rating and 76 penalty minutes. Tootoo has been suspended multiple times throughout his NHL career.
