The New Jersey Devils have avoided arbitration with defenceman Mirco Mueller.

The team announced Monday that it had signed the 24-year-old to a one-year, $1.4-million contract.

The Devils and Mueller were scheduled to have an arbitration hearing on July 28.

Mueller, a first-round pick (18th overall) in 2013, posted one goal and 10 assists in 53 games for New Jersey last season, his second with the club.

The six-foot-three, 210-pound rearguard is heading into his sixth NHL campaign, having spent his first three seasons in the league with the San Jose Sharks.
