NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey Devils right-winger Brian Rolston is expected to miss at least a month after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia.
The Devils said Rolston was placed on long-term injured reserve after Thursday’s procedure in Philadelphia. The IR move freed US$5 million off the team’s salary cap.
The short-handed Devils, who started with 20 players on the roster, recalled defenceman Matt Corrente and centres Tim Sestito and Jacob Josefson from Albany of the American Hockey League.
The Devils also disclosed Thursday that defenceman Mark Fraser has a broken right hand. General manager Lou Lamoriello said Fraser’s hand probably was broken in a first-period fight with Buffalo’s Cody McCormick on Wednesday night. The Devils beat the Sabres 1-0 in overtime.
Rolston, a 16-year veteran who scored 20 goals last season, was injured in New Jersey’s loss at Washington on Saturday.
