Did the Flames get robbed of a goal after review?

Watch as Sam Bennett and the Calgary Flames are denied a goal against Pekka Rinne and the Nashville Predators after inconclusive replay review.

Shades of 2004.

With the Calgary Flames on a 5-on-3 power play midway through their game against the Nashville Predators Tuesday, Sam Bennett one-timed a cross-crease pass towards Pekka Rinne who got across with his right pad.

But was it in time?

The play went to review to see if the puck fully crossed the goal line but was ultimately deemed a save.

With no conclusive camera angle showing the puck completely past the goal line, it’s not hard to understand how this one was not allowed. Keep in mind, the overhead angle shown in the video is not exactly perpendicular to the ice, meaning the angle we see is slightly skewed.

Not until the NHL has goal line technology or computer chips in pucks will we have a foolproof method of determining whether pucks conclusively cross the line.

Until then, Flames fans will constantly relive the nightmare that was the 2004 Stanley Cup Final.
