Watch: Refs break up Phaneuf-Iginla fight

Former teammates Dion Phaneuf and Jarome Iginla almost scrapped as the Leafs took on the Avs, but the refs had other ideas and split the two before they could fight. The crowd was very disappointed.

Why can’t we have nice things?

Midway through the second period of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 3-2 overtime victory over the Colorado Avalanche, former teammates Dion Phaneuf and Jarome Iginla were about to fight, but it was broken up before any punches were thrown–a decision met by a chorus of boos from fans at Air Canada Centre.

The altercation stemmed from a missed hit when Phaneuf grazed Iginla in open-ice as the Avalanche forward crossed the Leafs blue-line. Phaneuf and Iginla were teammates on the Calgary Flames for four-and-a-half years before Phaneuf was traded to the Leafs in 2010.

Iginla finished the game with two assists, while Phaneuf added a helper on Phil Kessel’s game-winner.
