Earlier this week, bobsled star Kaillie Humphries was awarded the 2014 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s top athlete, but Don Cherry thinks it should have gone to a hockey player.
“Kaillie Humphries, good luck to her, congratulations and everything, but you’re telling me Drew Doughty shouldn’t have got the Lou Marsh Trophy?” Cherry said on Coach’s Corner Saturday. “L.A. won the Cup and he was the guy…He was absolutely fantastic when they won the gold in the Olympics and everybody knows the most important thing in the Olympics is hockey.”
Doughty had six points in six games at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics en route to his second Olympic gold medal before adding 19 points in 26 post-season games several months later en route to his second Stanley Cup championship.
“It’s come to the point now no hockey player can ever win the Lou Marsh Trophy from here on in because you can’t do any more than he did,” Cherry added. “He [won] the Stanley Cup and the gold medal.”
Sidney Crosby is the only hockey player to win the award in the last 20 years; he did so in 2007 and 2009. Since 1936, the Lou Marsh Trophy has been awarded to a hockey player 12 times, which is more than any other sport.
