The Calgary Flames formally announced a much discussed five-year, $23.5 million extension for defenseman T.J. Brodie on Monday.

The 24-year old is currently tied for the league lead in scoring among defensemen with seven points in seven games.

Brodie’s contract will represent a $4.65 million annual cap hit, but as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Freidman notes, he will earn a salary of $3.9 million in the first year of the deal.

Elliotte Friedman on Twitter: “Brodie is a $4.65M AAV. Interesting: his first year is $3.9M — a nod to Giordano, who has one year left on his deal at $4M. (1/2)”

Friedman also notes that Brodie will have a limited no-trade clause that kicks in for the third year of the deal.

Brodie set career-highs in games played (81), goals (4), and points (31) in 2013-14. The former fourth round pick has scored 11 goals and 66 points in 192 games in the NHL.
