Flames assign Shinkaruk, Poirier, Wotherspoon to AHL

Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving joins HC@Noon to discuss the team’s expectations heading into 2017-18, and why he feels Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk are big keys to the success of his club.

The Calgary Flames have assigned wingers Hunter Shinkaruk and Emile Poirier, and defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon to the AHL’s Stockton Heat.

This leaves 28 players remaining in Flames training camp.

Both first-round selections in the 2013 NHL Draft, Shinkaruk was originally taken 24th overall by the Vancouver Canucks and Poirier 22nd overall by Calgary. Wotherspoon was a second-round pick of the Flames, 57th overall, back in 2011.

Shinkaruk was acquired by Calgary in a February 2016 trade with Vancouver.

The trio has a combined 53 games worth of NHL experience under their belt.

The players were put on waivers Tuesday.
