Flames fire assistants Cookson, McLennan

The Calgary Flames will not be bringing back Rob Cookson and Jamie McLennan as assistants.

The club announced Monday it had declined the options on the two coaches for the 2011-12 season. McLennan has been offered another position within the organization.

“While our comprehensive review of the hockey department is ongoing, we believe it is important that when decisions are made with respect to personnel, we communicate those decisions in a timely manner,” said Flames acting general manager Jay Feaster. “As further decisions are finalized we will continue the process of informing our staff and releasing information as expeditiously as possible.”

Thought they were in the playoff race until the final week of the season, the Flames had a disappointing year, finishing three points back of the eighth-place Chicago Blackhawks.
