Flyers mascot Gritty joins forces with Phillie Phanatic

Girtty continued to steal the spotlight this pre-season but it was the New York Rangers who beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2.

It’s been a busy week for Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty after he became the latest internet sensation, and his antics continued on Saturday night.

Gritty decided to take the short walk down the road to Citizens Bank Park to meet a legend in the Phillie Phanatic, and let’s just say it was a match made in mascot heaven.

The Philadephia Phillies mascot has been around since 1978, so it only makes sense for him to teach the new kid on the block how it’s done.

Since being unveiled by the Flyers, Gritty’s fame has skyrocketed with the mascot gaining over 100,000 followers on Twitter and making an appearance on The Tonight Show.

Philadelphia sports fans have embraced the new mascot, with some even going the extra mile by getting Gritty tattoos.

Philadelphia bar operator Jimmy Lardani explained the decision to get the tattoo, stating the connection that the city and the new beloved mascot have developed.

“The GIF where he has his back to the camera and he turns around and he has just a terrifying look on his face and the googly eyes,” Lardani told NHL.com. “That’s when I thought this guy is a man of the people of Philadelphia. This guy has seen some things.”

Not everyone has shared the same excitement for the Flyers’ mascot because of his frightening appearance and persona.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Flyers and Gritty have in store with the NHL regular season kicking off this week, but it appears that the shock-and-awe approach is working so far.
