Gomez signs PTO with Capitals’ AHL affiliate

Two former Devils hooked up to get the Blues a goal against their former team, with Scott Gomez setting up Martin Havlat to score in his first game in the St. Louis uniform.

Scott Gomez has signed a professional tryout contract with the Washington Capitals‘ AHL affiliate the Hershey Bears, the team announced Thursday.

In 21 games with the St. Louis Blues this season, Gomez scored one goal and eight points before the Blues placed him on unconditional waivers on Dec. 30. Since he is not signed to a contract with the Capitals, Washington would not be able to call him up until they did so.

“I think it’s good,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz said to the Washington Post. “We’re a little thin there because of the centre ice injuries and call-ups and all of those things, so Scott has been a really good pro in the league for a long time. He’s got a real high skill set.

“Good on [Hershey] to do that, and that’ll help the kids and help the team and give them some more depth at that centre ice position.”

Gomez joined the Blues through a PTO earlier this season. He has 755 points in 1066 career NHL games.
