Toronto Maple Leafs rookie centre Auston Matthews scored his 30th goal of the season Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens.
Scoring it at the 1:19 mark of the third period, Matthews tipped a Zach Hyman shot past Carey Price while moving towards the front of the net.
With the marker, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 NHL Draft joins the man who went right after him, Winnipeg Jets winger Patrik Laine, as the first pair of teenagers to reach the 30-goal plateau in the same season since Trevor Linden and Pierre Turgeon did it in the 1988-89 season.
Matthews also scored his 29th of the season in the first period of this same game.
Laine scored his 30th of the year against Toronto on Tuesday.
Matthews’ two goals moved him into a tie with Laine in the rookie scoring and goal-scoring race with 54 points and 30 goals each.
The Maple Leafs ended up losing the game 3-2 in overtime.
