Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray is looking at options outside the organization in his search for a new head coach, according to a report from the Orange County Register.
Former NHLer Travis Green was one named mentioned as a potential candidate for the Ducks. Green, 45, is currently the head coach for the American Hockey League’s Utica Comets and guided the Vancouver Canucks affiliate to the Calder Cup final in 2015.
Canucks GM Jim Benning wouldn’t comment on if the Ducks had asked for permission to speak to Green, a spokesperson told the Orange County Register.
Anaheim fired Bruce Boudreau on April 29 after the Ducks were eliminated in seven games by the Nashville Predators during the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Boudreau has since been hired by the Minnesota Wild.
The report from Eric Stephens, which was published on Monday, says that Green was considered as a replacement when Boudreau and the Ducks struggled at the start of the season.
Current Anaheim assistants Paul MacLean and Trent Yawney are also in consideration. MacLean won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year in 2013 while with the Ottawa Senators.
Randy Carlyle is another name that Stephens says shouldn’t be dismissed. Carlyle coached the Ducks to a Stanley Cup in 2007, but was relieved by Boudreau in 2011 after a rough start to the year. The report says that Carlyle was being looked at by Minnesota and is expected to be interviewed by the Calgary Flames next week.
The Orange County Register says that the Flames are reportedly looking into former Minnesota coach Mike Yeo to fill their head coaching vacancy after firing Bob Hartley. The report says that it isn’t known if Yeo is on Anaheim’s radar, but did say that Hartley wasn’t a potential candidate for the Ducks.
Anaheim is hoping to have a coaching replacement by June’s NHL draft.
