In a battle of The Greats, the real winner was charity.
Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin faced each other in NHL 20, streamed on Twitch Wednesday, and raised over $40,000 for two local charities in the process.
The money will be split between the Edmonton Food Bank and the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation’s “Feeding the Frontlines” fund, which provides meals from Capitals and Washington Wizards chefs to frontline workers fighting COVID-19 in the D.C. area.
Over $20,000 was raised from donations during the stream, while Ovechkin and Gretzky will each match the half that is going to the charity in the city they represented.
On the virtual ice, Gretzky took Game 1 in an overtime thriller 5-4. Ovechkin’s Capitals tied the score with under three seconds to go but Gretzky’s Oilers bounced back to win on a snipe from the slot.
Ovechkin took control early in Game 2 and held on to win the game 4-1 over two periods.
Here are some of the best moments from the series.
