BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — Glen Hanlon has been fired as Slovakia coach after the team’s poor performance at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.
The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation said Wednesday that its executive committee voted 7-2 to dismiss Hanlon.
The 54-year-old from Brandon, Man., had been given a four-year contract in March 2010 until the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
But Slovakia, the 2002 world champion, failed to make the playoffs in hosting the April 29-May 15 tournament for the first time after only beating unheralded Slovenia and Denmark.
Hanlon, a former NHL player, was the first foreigner to coach the team.
The federation is scheduled to appoint a new coach next month.
