The Carolina Hurricanes announced that goaltender Eddie Lack has been placed on the injured reserve after he suffered a concussion during practice on Monday.
Michael Leighton has been called up from Charlotte Checkers of the AHL in his place.
Lack’s concussion comes during a miserable start to his season. In just five games played this year (four started), he is 1-2-1 with a .856 save percentage and 3.78 goals-against average.
Acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in 2015 in exchange for two draft picks, Lack had a decent first year with the Hurricanes splitting time with Cam Ward. In 34 games last year, Lack picked up 12 wins with a .901 save percentage and 2.81 goals-against average.
Leighton is a long-time NHL veteran with 35 wins, a .901 save percentage and a 2.96 goals-against average in 106 career games played. However, he has limited NHL experience recently having only played in three NHL games since the start of the 2010-2011 season.
For the Checkers this year, he is off to a 6-2-1 record with a .937 save percentage and 1.66 goals-against average in 10 games.
The Carolina Hurricanes have been hot as of late, winners of four straight, mainly due to the resurgence of Ward.
They now sit in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division with a 7-6-4 record.
