Hurricanes GM says team is looking to trade some of its NHL draft picks

Brandon Wheat Kings centre Nolan Patrick, who many are projecting to be taken first overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, talks about his fondest memories from the juniors, putting emphasis on being part of good teams above any individual accolades.

If you’re looking for a team that could make a big splash this summer, the Carolina Hurricanes are a good candidate.

A team on the rise, with plenty of good young talent and a plethora of early-20s defencemen who any team would pay a hefty price for, the Hurricanes are a prime candidate to make a push forward. They already made a move to address their biggest need, acquiring goalie Scott Darling from the Chicago Blackhawks and signing him to a four-year contract.

We shouldn’t expect the off-season movement to end there.

Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said as much during a recent meeting with team scouts that was documented in an exclusive video put out by the club’s Twitter account.

Francis addressed the fact that the Hurricanes have 10 picks in the upcoming NHL Draft, six of which will come in the top 73 spots.

“I’m hoping we don’t use all 10 when it comes to the draft,” Francis said. “We have had contact with other teams telling them we are willing to make some deals and give up some of the picks to get players.”

The Hurricanes finished with 87 points this past season, missing the playoffs for the eighth straight campaign. Jeff Skinner led the team in scoring with 37 goals and 63 points, while Justin Faulk, Noah Hanifin, Jaccob Slavin and Brett Pesce are among the names in their impressive, young defensive core.
