Hurricanes to host first outdoor game at Carter-Finley Stadium in 2021

The Hockey Night in Canada panel discusses the expected contract extension between Jake Muzzin and the Toronto Maple Leafs, season-ending injuries around the NHL, and Evander Kane lashing out on social media after his suspension.

The Carolina Hurricanes will host the first outdoor game in franchise history when the Stadium Series comes to Raleigh, N.C., next season.

The game will be played at Carter-Finley Stadium — home of the N.C. State Wolfpack — on Feb. 20, 2021. It will be the 12th game in the Stadium Series and 32nd outdoor game in NHL history.

“What’s significant here, first of all,” Chris Johnston said during the Headlines segment of Hockey Night in Canada, “that’s going to be the only outdoor game other than the Winter Classic on next year’s schedule. But also, the league wants to take this to new destinations.”

Johnston went on to note that other locales that have not hosted an outdoor Stadium Series game may be on the NHL’s radar moving forward, although none are confirmed as being next in line to host.

“I think beyond this, places like Vegas, Arizona, Tampa, Nashville – those are open – and I think they want to go somewhere else.”

An opponent for the Hurricanes in 2021 was not announced.
