Hurricanes sign Julien Gauthier to entry-level deal

Top NHL Draft prospect Julien Gauthier of the Val-d’Or Foreurs offers some tips to becoming arguably the QMJHL's best sniper and maybe the first player out of Quebec who'll have his name called in June.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Julien Gauthier to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Saturday.

Gauthier was taken 21st overall after scoring an impressive 41 goals in 54 games with the Val d’Or Foreurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

His father and grandfather are world-class bodybuilders, and Julien has been working out since he was nine years old.

“For an 18-year-old, Julien already has the body of a professional hockey player,” said Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis on his team’s website. “He had a great week in Raleigh for development camp, and will play an important role in the Hurricanes’ future.”

The deal pays Gauthier $832,500 at the NHL level and $70,000 at the AHL level and comes with a $277,500 signing bonus.
