Edmonton Oilers’ arena district gets new name

Connor McDavid and Peter Chiarelli comment after the Edmonton Oilers inter squad scrimmage.

Edmonton’s arena neighbourhood has a new name.

The Ice District was announced Monday afternoon by arena officials at a news conference downtown.

The newly christened neighbourhood will serve as home to state-of-the-art Rogers Place, the Oilers’ new workplace, which is scheduled to open for the fall of 2016. (Fans can even watch a live feed of the arena’s ongoing construction.)

“Edmonton is a strong northern city. It’s only fitting that we build our brand around this symbol,” Bob Nicholson, CEO and vice chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group, said at the event. “And hockey is our sport.

“This is going to be a place that people want to come to. Create memories with families and friends. We should be proud.”
