Veteran NHL defenceman Cory Sarich may be making his comeback from injury at the upcoming Spengler Cup.
Sarich, who’s been without an NHL team since suffering a cycling accident in July, was told that Canada would save a spot for him on their Spengler Cup roster if he was ready to suit up for hockey action.
“One of the players on (team Canada’s) radar is Cory Sarich,” Elliotte Friedman said on Hockey Night in Canada. “If he’s available to play he may be extended a spot.”
If that’s the case it would be a remarkable comeback for the defenceman who suffered serious injuries in a cycling accident in July when he slid under a pickup truck that had turned in front of him.

The 36-year-old sustained five cracked vertebrae, a serious case of road rash, a swollen left arm and leg, a large laceration on his head, and burns on his shoulders and wrist from the truck’s muffler from the accident. In addition he had to deal with a knee injury and a staph infection in his elbow that required further time in the hospital.
Sarich, who resumed skating on November 20th, had a goal and 10 points in 54 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season. The 15-year veteran has 158 points over 969 games in his NHL career.
