New York Islanders forward Michael Grabner will have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL’s department of player safety on Monday after delivering a contentious elbow to the head of Carolina Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe.

The incident occurred during the Hurricanes’ 4-3 victory on Saturday at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

At 6:42 of the first period Gerbe rushed into the Isles’ zone and, while in the process of releasing a shot from the left wing faceoff circle, was hit high by a back-checking Grabner.

No penalty was called on the play, and Gerbe played his regular shifts after the collision.

The NHL has reviewed the play on the grounds of illegal check to the head and will hold a telephone hearing with Grabner, meaning a suspension will not exceed five games.
