The Winnipeg Jets have signed forward Emile Poirier to a professional tryout, the team announced Friday.

Poirier, 24, hasn’t played an NHL game since the 2015-16 season.

The forward was once considered a promising prospect with the Calgary Flames after being drafted by the club in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2013 draft, but his time with the Flames came to an end in June 2018 after the club opted not to extend a qualifying offer his way.

In 2017, Poirier opened up about his battle with alcohol abuse and how he was recovering with the support of the Flames. He spent last season with the Jets’ minor league affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, after signing with the AHL club a year ago, and will now compete for another chance at an NHL roster.
