Former Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic is expected to take on a large front office position with his former team, according to Hockey Central Insiders Daren Millard and Nick Kypreos.
The Hockey Hall of Famer has been an executive advisor to the team since 2011.
The Avalanche recently fired their head coach Joe Sacco after the team finished second last in the NHL and worst in the Western Conference during shortened 2013 season. More changes are expected throughout the franchise.
There have been rumours that if Sakic took over hockey operations that Craig Billington could become the team’s general manager (Greg Sherman is the Avs’ current GM) and would try to recruit longtime friend Patrick Roy to become the team’s head coach.
Former Avalanche defenceman Adam Foote’s name has also been bandied about as a possible assistant coach.
However, the team has yet to comment on Sakic’s future with the franchise or any management rumours.
