The Colorado Avalanche have officially named Joe Sakic general manager.
Greg Sherman served as the team’s GM last season and will remain part of the Avalanche staff going forward as assistant GM.
Sakic also retains his title as executive vice-president of hockey operations for the Avalanche, a position he has held since May 2013.
Last season, despite not having the title of GM, Sakic still had final say on hockey personnel decision, as Adrian Dater of the Denver Post pointed out Friday.
Sakic spent his entire 20-year NHL playing career with the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise after being drafted 15th overall by Quebec in 1987. The 45-year-old Burnaby, B.C., native served as captain for 17 seasons and helped the team to Stanley Cup victories in 1996 and 2001.
The Avalanche finished first in the Central Division last season after ending the 2012-13 campaign with the worst record in the Western Conference.
