Joe Thornton leaves Wednesday game with injury

Clayton Stoner hit Sharks centre Joe Thornton shoulder-to-shoulder. Thornton may have been injured on the play.

It may not be the happiest New Year for the San Jose Sharks, as they could start 2015 without their former captain and current leading scorer.

Joe Thornton, who inexplicably had the ‘C’ removed from his jersey before this season, took what looked like a harmless hit from Anaheim’s Clayton Stoner midway through the first period of Wednesday’s game. Thornton left the game to be evaluated and his return was said to be “questionable.”

If Thornton does miss time due to an injury, it would be very uncharacteristic.

That’s some amazing durability from a 35-year-old veteran.

Thornton, one of the best playmakers in the NHL today, has 23 assists and 32 points in 37 games this season to lead the Sharks in scoring. At 19-13-5, San Jose entered Wednesday’s game as the second wild card in the Western Conference, two points behind the Winnipeg Jets.
