NHL contract comparison: Lupul vs. Benn

Toronto Maple Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul and Dallas Stars winger Jamie Benn recently signed identical five-year, $26.25 million contracts.

Lupul signed his on Jan. 20, and Benn came to an agreement on Jan. 24 after missing the first few games of the season. The deals give both players a salary cap hit of $5.25 million.

Although Lupul is six years older than Benn, the two have put up similar numbers in the past.

Last season, Lupul had 66 points in 67 games, while Benn had 63 points in 71 games. Benn has increased his point totals in each of the three years he’s been in the league, and Lupul has had multiple campaigns of 50 or more points.

Benn is expected to make his season debut for the Stars on Saturday night against the St. Louis Blues, while Lupul will miss the next six to eight weeks after fracturing his forearm earlier this week.

These identical deals have many people debating which team got the better deal…
