KHL fans arrested for throwing hats on the ice

Three fans threw their hats on the ice Tuesday night in Russia

Throwing jerseys on the ice may have drawn the ire of Phil Kessel, but it was the throwing of hats got a group of fans into trouble in Russia.

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Puck Daddy blog, three fans were arrested during Tuesday’s KHL game between Sibir and Ak Bars after throwing their hats on the ice to celebrate a hat trick.

The police who were working at the game must have been unaware of the long-standing hockey tradition of throwing your hat on the ice after a hat trick. Instead, the police were reportedly under the impression that the three fans “were disrupting the peace.”

Sibir indicated the fines will be covered by the hockey club, per a translation done by Yahoo!.
