ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Move over, Zdeno Chara.
The Kontinental Hockey League says Russian defenceman Denis Kulyash has smashed hockey’s hardest shot record.
Kulyash hit 110.3 miles per hour at the KHL’s all-star skills competiton Saturday — well ahead of the 105.9 m.p.h. shot Chara registered at last weekend’s NHL all-star game in Raleigh, N.C.
The 27-year-old Kulyash plays for Avangard Omsk in the Russian-based league and has 11 goals and 24 points in 46 games this season.
He was an eighth-round pick of the Nashville Predators in 2004, but has never played in the NHL.
Chara, a six-foot-nine defenceman for the Boston Bruins, has captured the hardest shot competition during the past four NHL all-star weekends.
