Kings considering buying out defenceman Dion Phaneuf

During Headlines, the panel discussed the respective futures of both Patrick Marleau with the Maple Leafs and Dion Phaneuf with the Los Angeles Kings. They also touched on Erik Karlsson and whether or not he will continue with the San Jose Sharks.

Defenceman Dion Phaneuf could be on the way out of Los Angeles, according to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos.

With the Los Angeles Kings finishing the season as the Western Conference’s basement dwellers, it’s clear that an overhaul is needed, which is why Phaneuf might be sacrificed.

“Other options that the L.A. Kings have is buying out Dion Phaneuf,” said Kypreos during the ‘Headlines’ segment of Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. “He’s got two years left at $12 million. That would get him $8 million over the next four years and a chance to get back into unrestricted free agency on July 1.”

Phaneuf, 34, posted six points in 67 regular-season games with the Kings in 2018-19.
