Kings place Marian Gaborik on IR with broken foot

Marian Gaborik is out of the World Cup of Hockey with an injury after taking this shot from Mats Zuccarello off the foot.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Kings have placed right wing Marian Gaborik on injured reserve with a broken right foot.

The Kings formally made the move Thursday.

Gaborik was struck by teammate Mats Zuccarello’s shot while they were playing for Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey last month.

Gaborik is expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks, keeping the Slovak goal-scorer out of the Kings’ lineup until late November.

The 34-year-old Gaborik is making more than $6 million in the third season of a seven-year, $34.125 million contract through 2021. He scored just 22 points in 54 games last season, the lowest-scoring performance of his 15-year NHL career.

Los Angeles opens the regular season at San Jose on Wednesday.
