Leafs ink first-rounder Percy to 3-year deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have rewarded first-round pick Stuart Percy for his strong start to the season, inking the defenceman to a three-year entry level deal, the team announced Tuesday.

Percy, selected 25th overall by the Leafs in June’s NHL Entry Draft, is currently in his third season with the OHL’s Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. The Oakville, Ont., native was named team captain on Nov. 7 and is currently fourth in team scoring and eighth among OHL defenceman with three goals and 17 points in 18 games.

Last season with the Majors, Percy collected four goals and 30 assists with a plus-50 rating in 64 games. He also helped anchor the Majors’ blueline at the 2011 Memorial Cup, finishing with four assists in five games and being named to the tournament’s all-star team.

Percy, 18, represented the OHL in this month’s CHL Subway Super Series against Team Russia and is in the running to lock down a spot with Team Canada at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton in December.
