Leafs place Clarkson on IR with elbow injury

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle comments on David Clarkson being placed on IR with an elbow injury.

The Toronto Maple Leafs placed winger David Clarkson on the injured reserve on Friday, according to coach Randy Carlyle.

Clarkson is expected to miss at least the next three games to have a bursa sac in his elbow removed. The 29-year-old suffered a nasty cut to his elbow in a game against Carolina on Jan. 9 that required 18 stitches to close. It’s not known whether the two injuries are related.

Clarkson has struggled this season after signing a seven-year, $36.75-million contract with the Leafs in July. In 36 games, Clarkson has three goals and eight points. He has missed 12 games this season due to a pair of suspensions.

Frazier McLaren has also been placed on IR with a bruised shoulder.
