Longtime Montreal Canadiens scout Elmer Benning has passed away at the age of 77.
Benning served as a scout for the Canadiens for nearly five decades, playing a key role in adding franchise-altering talents like netminder Carey Price. Benning’s son, Jim, currently serves as general manager for the Vancouver Canucks, while grandson Matt plays for the Edmonton Oilers.
The Canadiens issued the following statement Friday:
It is with great sadness that the Montreal Canadiens organization learned of the passing of Mr. Elmer Benning yesterday, December 27, at the age of 77, in Edmonton.
A member of the Canadiens’ amateur scouting department for the past 47 years, Mr. Benning was a loyal and devoted hockey man, and an individual extremely respected by his colleagues across the hockey world.
The Montreal Canadiens wish to extend their deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Benning.
