Toronto Maple Leafs tough guy Frazer McLaren was cut for eight stitches when he dropped the gloves in a staged fight with Ottawa Senators rookie Dave Dziurzynski just 28 seconds into the first period of Wednesday’s wild Battle of Ontario at the Air Canada Centre.
But the stitches are nothing compared to what Dziurzynski suffered when McLaren caught the winger with a “lucky” — and frightening — knockout punch that dropped him to the ice and put him out of the game with a concussion.
This is scary stuff with David Dziurzynski getting knocked out by McLaren. Sickening to see that in person.

“We had a flat start last game. I was just trying to get us going early. I asked him (to fight), and he actually said no, so I thought we weren’t going to go. Then we ended up dropping (gloves) as soon as the puck dropped.
“He gave me a few good ones early,” McLaren, who has 32 penalty minutes in 16 games played, explained after the game. “It was just a lucky punch. Those happen sometimes.”
McLaren said he tried to find out through team staff how Dziurzynski was doing in between periods. Said he’s concerned for him right now.

Milan Lucic, asked about the MacLaren-Dziurzynski fight: “I definitely don’t have a problem with staged fighting at all.”
