Maple Leafs’ Alexander Kerfoot out indefinitely after facial surgery

Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock discusses what Alex Kerfoot has brought to the team as the third line centre, and why it will be difficult to replace him down the middle.

Toronto Maple Leafs centre Alexander Kerfoot is out of the lineup indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair facial dental fractures.

Kerfoot sustained the injury on Nov. 5 against the Los Angeles Kings.

The team said in a statement that Kerfoot had ongoing discomfort earlier this week when Toronto was in New York to face the Islanders. Consultation testing determined surgery was required to repair the fractures.

Kerfoot has five goals and three assists in 20 games this season with the Maple Leafs — his first with the team.

He was acquired along with Tyson Barrie on July 1 in a trade that sent Nazem Kadri to the Avalanche.
